All – A belated
Happy New Year to you all. Apologies for the out of season mailing to the Lowes
Line distribution list, but I thought this warranted your time. As you know, we
are in the process of raising funds to permanently endow the Marcus Lowes
Scholarship at NU [Ed.
note: the original post describing the Lowes Scholarship appeared last
month. I've re-posted it at the bottom of this page]. We have made an initial contribution of $50,000 in late
December to Northwestern, and have raised some additional money through the
solicitation mentioned in the Lowes Line before the (disaster of a) bowl game.
To those of you on this list who have already contributed, a big thank you. To
those who haven’t and have been considering it, I’m hoping the following will
get you involved.
Most everyone
has seen or played in a Super Bowl box pool. The concept is simple: Pick an
open square from a 10x10 grid, and if the last number of the score from both
teams after each quarter aligns with your square, you win. Complete, absolute,
blind luck, but fun nonetheless. I’ve set up a Box Pool game for the Super
Bowl, where each box is $50, and 60% of the winnings will go to the fund. Very
easy:
- Go to: http://www.runyourpool.com/join.cfm
- Enter the following information:
a. In the Pool ID box, enter the
number 14901
b. In the Pool Password box, enter
'marcus' (without the single quotes)
- Fill out the form information, including
a personal username and password
- Make your picks
- For each square you choose, send $50 via
PayPal to LowesScholarship@gmail.com
Payout for each
full grid will be:
- $250 for players winning 1st
& 3rd quarter score
- $500 for player winning halftime
score
- $1,000 for player winning final
score
- $3,000 to the fund
Please consider
this, and help us fill out multiple grids. The numbers along the axes will be
assigned once the grid is full. It doesn’t matter whether you’re rooting for
the Giants or simply against their opponent. Buy a few squares and help the
cause.
Thanks, and let
me know if you have any questions.

It’s been almost 13 years since we lost Marcus Lowes,
our friend and brother, and the one for whom this football commentary
is named. The Marcus J. Lowes Memorial Scholarship Fund at Northwestern
University has been established, and will provide a scholarship to a
deserving graduate student at Medill, and likely one with a focus on
sports journalism, akin to Marcus’s interests. This scholarship
will be from a permanently endowed fund at NU. Here’s where you
can help. Through existing donations and pledges, we are at about
80% of the money needed to perpetually fund this scholarship, which we
plan to initially award in 2013. On behalf of the trustees,
I’m asking that you make a donation, large or small, to help continue
to honor the memory of someone we all hold dear. Donations can be
made via PayPal to: LowesScholarship@gmail.com.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation that will allow us to
permanently honor the memory of Marcus and make an appreciable,
positive impact on a Northwestern student.
In an effort to achieve the goal, Brian Ullery, who serves as President
of the Trust, has issued a challenge. He has pledged to put up
$100 for every $1,000 collectively raised. So if Dr. Brian has
ever trounced you in beer pong, edged you by a nose in a pitcher race,
or simply given you just a little too much of an earful over the years
about how southwest Ohio is as close to heaven on earth as there is,
now's your chance to get him back. Remember, this is a guy who as
an NU freshman openly rooted for Ohio State in a game at
Welsh-Ryan. Stick it to him with a donation and help us reach the
goal. And in all seriousness, thanks to Brian for making this
generous offer.
