The 2009 Victory over Iowa:
Is It One of the Greatest?

Certainly, Northwestern's win over Iowa last Saturday was a monumental win for the program.  It made the 'Cats bowl eligible, it was the first time NU beat a #4-ranked team at their own house, and it provided a wealth of local media coverage on a day when Notre Dame went down in flames, giving NU more claim to the title "Chicago's Team."

It was a heroic game for NU's defense and both its quarterbacks.  NU's kicker also put the icing on the cake with a 47-yarder to clinch the win.

So, here's the question:  was this one of NU's all-time greatest games?  For years, HailToPurple.com has kept its list of the top 25 games in the program's history.  We won't determine what spot Iowa 2009 gets on the list until after the season.  After all, one of the criteria for the greatest games list is the effect the game had on the season, as well as the program.  If this win springboards NU to a bowl, and NU wins that bowl, the significance of the win over Iowa is greater than if NU doesn't reach the postseason.

For an example of this, note the 2004 win over OSU, which is ranked #14.  Had NU won a Big Ten title that year or won a bowl, then it's probable that the game would have been ranked higher.

In the meantime, however, where would you rank the win over the #4 Hawkeyes?  E-mail your suggestions to GoUPurple@aol.com.
