Reports: NU Fires OC, Other Staffers;
Hires Lujan, Promotes McGarigle

First, it's important to note that-- as of January 23-- Northwestern has not announced any of these coaching changes. In fact, in the last three weeks NU has only made a public statement about Ryan Field's demolition (set to begin next week). The school has not yet formally announced:
  • The reported coaching changes, listed below;
  • The 2024 football schedule (EIU announced its game with NU);
  • Any update on season tickets or where home games will be played in 2024

Reports in December from both Matt Fortuna of The Inside Zone and Louie Vaccher of Northwestern's Rivals site indicate that NU coach David Braun has fired offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian, special teams coach and longtime NU staffer Jeff Genyk, and director of sports performance Jay Hooten. The reports came days after ESPN appeared to break the news of Bajakian's dismissal during the Las Vegas Bowl's TV coverage.

According to Vaccher, it was also likely that offensive line coach Kurt Anderson would leave. That appears to be the case, and there are unconfirmed reports that San Diego State OL coach Bill O'Boyle will join the 'Cats.

On January 7, ESPN reported that former NU player and linebacker coach Tim McGarigle has been promoted to defensive coordinator. If the other reports of departing staff are correct, that means that McGarigle is the ONLY coach left at NU from Coach Fitzgerald's last season in Evanston.

Around the same time, we learned that South Dakota State offensive coordinator Zach Lujan was reportedly hired by Braun as his new OC. If that is correct, it could spell a significant upgrade to NU's offensive staff.

Jeff Genyk's replacement as tight ends and special teams coach is apparently Washington quality control coach Paul Creighton.
