NU Names David Braun
The 30th Head Coach of NU Football



NOVEMBER 11-- The gentleman holding the nineteenth century football in the photo to the left? That's Walter McCornack as a college player, who later coached Northwestern from 1903 to 1905. Shockingly, he was the last NU coach to win at least five games in his debut season at Northwestern-- until today! Interim Head Coach David Braun just notched his fifth win at NU, and counting.

By the way, in his debut season at NU in 1935, Pappy Waldorf won four games-- and also won the very first national coach of the year award.

NOVEMBER 15-- Northwestern made the obvious official Wednesday afternoon, announcing that it had elevated Coach David Braun from Interim to full Head Coach of the NU football team. Braun officially replaces Pat Fitzgerald, who was removed in July.

Braun becomes the 30th official head coach of the program, and 31st unofficially. His promotion comes on the heels of a player-led social media drive following the win over Wisconsin, when players and fans flooded Twitter/X with the "#RemoveTheTag" hashtag, calling for NU to drop the "Interim" from Braun's title.

Thrown into a nearly-impossible situation to navigate-- brought cold into a program that went 1-11 last year and had won only four games in its last two seasons, a beloved coach removed from his position, a stomach-churning scandal, and raw feelings on all sides-- Braun has executed nearly flawlessly.
