Big Ten Announces New Schedule for 2022;
NU Loses Indiana, Picks Up Penn State
The Big Ten has announced its new 2022 schedule, releasing details on the Big Ten Network on Wednesday.
The
changes to this year's schedule are in response to the significant
changes that teams had to make to their 2020 schedules, which were
truncated due the pandemic. Many games surviving the shortened schedule
were eventually scrapped on the fly as teams dealt with Covid outbreaks
that fall. Word about the changes made to the 2022 conference slate was
leaked earlier this week on Penn State's official website.
NU
saw one major change: Indiana is now off its 2022 schedule and a road
game to Penn State is added. Obviously, that is a significant upgrade
to NU's strength of schedule, and it comes at a bad time with NU
reeling from a terrible 2021 season.
The 'Cats' Wisconsin game remains at Ryan Field, but shifts from
October 1 to October 8. The (somewhat) good news for NU is that the
team is one of only three conference teams with two bye weeks. NU's new
bye week opens up with the September 3 Indiana game being scrapped.
Also, NU's trip to Penn State in October is the team's first road game
(except for that quick hop to Ireland).
