Big Ten Cancels
All Non-Conference Games

The Big Ten announced on July 9 that most of its fall athletic teams were canceling non-conference games for the 2020-2021 season, including all regularly-scheduled football games outside of the conference. So far, the Big Ten is the only conference to take this step, but other conferences are likely to follow. According to USA Today, the Pac-12 is considering also switching to a conference-only slate.

The move eliminates Northwestern's non-conference games vs. Tulane, Central Michigan, and Morgan State-- all home games. With the earlier cancellation of the Wrigley Field game vs. Wisconsin, this leaves only three home games for NU during 2020 (it is assumed, however, that the Wisconsin game will likely be rescheduled to Ryan Field, completing NU's home game conference slate). If the current schedule holds-- a huge if-- NU will open the season on the road at MSU, have two bye weeks, and then play its second game on the road at Penn State, before opening at home with its homecoming match vs. Nebraska.

The conference issued a reminder that it continues to evaluate the fall sports schedule.
